Cyber Fraud: Online fraud cases in India are increasing rapidly, and in this episode a new fraud has emerged with a 38 -year -old woman from Mangaluru. This time the case was not like fake parcels, digital arrests, or work-form-home scams, but cyber thugs adopted a new method and cheated the woman through a fake job interview link sent through SMS.
Learn how cheated
According to a report by Deccan Herald, Vasundha Gopalakrishna Shenoy, who works as a manager at a bank branch in Belthangadi, has been a victim of this cyber fraud. A link to a website called “interviewshinie.co.in” came through SMS on his phone. He felt that this was an advertisement of a job interview and he clicked on that link without any doubt.
On clicking on the link, his Gmail account and Amazon app were hacked. With the help of these apps, the hackers received their credit card and other sensitive information and withdrew money in fake ways. Within a few hours, the victim received several SMS alerts, in which different transactions of a total of Rs 2,19,500 were known. This amount was deducted with their bank card, Amazon card and credit card. As soon as he realized the fraud, he lodged a complaint at the police station.
Police registered a case
The victim immediately complained to the police, and the case has been registered under Section 66 (D) of the IT Act and Sections 318 (2) and 318 (4) of the BNS Act. Cyber crime cases in India are growing very fast and thugs are defrauding people in new ways. In this case, the link sent to SMS was potentially connected to a malware. As soon as the victim clicked on this link, the malware was installed in her phone and the hackers got the access of their bank account and other apps, which made the hackers blow money from their account.
Method of avoiding cyber fraud
If a suspicious link comes from an unknown person, do not open it at all.
- If a message claims a job offer or interview link, first go to the official website of the company and contact the company directly.
- Before clicking on any link, see the full URL of the link by making mouse pointer (on computer) or long press (mobile). If the link looks suspicious, ignore it.
- Turn 2FA (OTP, Face ID, or other safety measures) in your Gmail, banking apps and other important accounts so that hackers reduce the chances of getting access.
- If accidentally clicked on a suspicious link, pay attention to your bank and credit card transactions. If there is an unauthorized transaction, contact the bank immediately and file a complaint in cybercrime.
