If your phone is not kept on flight mode in an airplane, it can cause big loss, pilot told the reason

Flight Mode in airplane: After boarding the airplane, passengers are asked to put their phones on flight mode. Have you wondered why this is done? Actually, there is a big reason to keep the phone in flight mode at the time of take-off or landing of the airplane. Giving information about the reason behind this, a pilot said that by not doing so, the pilots of the aircraft have difficulty in listening to the instructions, which can cause harm to the aircraft as well as the lives of the passengers.

What reason did the pilot give?

In a video going viral on TikTok, a pilot with the handle @perchpoint said that mobile phones can interfere with a pilot’s radio communication while trying to connect to the tower. He further said that if many mobile phones try to connect to the tower at the same time, it may cause difficulty for the pilot to hear instructions on his radio set. These mobile phones emit radio waves, which can interfere with the radio waves in the pilot’s headset.

Giving the example of a recent incident, he said that he had to face trouble due to a similar situation. He was asking the control tower for directions to his plane, but due to the radio waves coming from the mobile phone, he could not hear the instructions clearly. He compared it to the sound of a mosquito entering the ear.

What are the guidelines regarding flight mode in planes in India?

According to the instructions of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India, passengers are required to keep their phones on flight mode while flying. According to these guidelines, passengers have to keep every portable electronic device including mobile as well as laptop and tab in flight mode. However, some airlines may provide in-flight Wi-Fi facility depending on the capability of their aircraft and approval from DGCA.
