American billionaire Elon Musk’s Starlink is now going to face a tough challenge. In fact, the European Union (EU) has recently announced Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite (IRIS2). Through this, 290 satellites will be launched in different orbits to provide internet connectivity in remote areas. These satellites will be developed in collaboration with SpaceRISE, an alliance of European satellite operators and space companies. This plan will give a tough challenge to Starlink. Starlink is currently providing its services in more than 100 countries and regions of the world.
What is IRIS2 and how will it work?
EU has designed it to provide connectivity services to government customers, private companies and individuals. Under this, satellites will be sent in medium and low earth orbit. These satellites will work to provide secure connectivity and broadband connectivity in such areas where the network is weak or unavailable. In this, help of thousands of satellites will not be taken like Starlink and work will be done only through limited satellites. IRIS2 is being prepared only for Europe. In comparison, Starlink provides services to countries around the world and has so far sent more than 7,000 satellites into low Earth orbit.
These tasks will be taken from IRIS2
The European Space Agency said that IRIS2 will be used for many government purposes, especially border and maritime surveillance, crisis management and connection to security infrastructure. It can also be used in maritime transport, railways, aviation, automotive, smart energy grid management, banking, remote healthcare and to increase connectivity in rural areas.
The project will be ready in 12 years
A time frame of 12 years has been set for this project. It is expected to cost US $ 11 billion and the first satellite of the project will be launched in 2029. Its cost will be borne by the European Union, the European Space Agency and some private companies.
