Google QR Code: Gmail is mostly used in the office or corporate world in the country. It has been seen many times that when forgetting the Gmail password, people reset their password through OTP. But Google is now going to end this OTP system. Actually, now Google is bringing the QR code based verified system. This change is being done with the aim of strengthening security as the six-digit code to be sent by SMS can be affected by fishing attacks and fraud techniques such as SIM-Sweeping. According to a report by Forbes, this new system will be implemented in the coming months.
Gmail confirmed
For your information, let us know that GMAIL spokesman Ross Richanderfer has confirmed this new system. Apart from this, he said that now users will see a QR code on the screen instead of getting the code on their phone number, which they have to scan from their phone’s camera app. This process will not only be easy but will be more effective in terms of security.
Why is SMS based verification not safe?
Till now, Google used to verify users’ accounts by sending codes through SMS. However, many flaws were found in this entire process. Cyber criminals can get their code by cheating users with fishing techniques. Through the SIM-swapping attacks, they can take someone’s mobile number under their control and reach its gmail account. Google found that Hackers were also using SMS based verification for scams. It is called a traffic pumping or toll fraud in which cyber criminals earn money by sending verification code to fake numbers. Keeping this in mind, now Google has decided to implement this new system.
QR code will be more secure
Adopting the QR code technology will improve security significantly. This system directly makes connections between users and Google, which will prevent the fraud in the middle. This means that risks like fishing attacks and sim-swapping will almost end as there will be no need to share any code that can be stolen.
Google has clarified the intention behind this change, saying that SMS codes pose security risk for users and the company is constantly improving its safety measures to protect users from cyber threats. However, the exact launch date has not been announced yet, but Google has indicated that it will be given more updates soon.
