Police reached terrorists with the video of Zangi app, why do criminals use such apps?

On the night of 18 December, three terrorists attacked a police post in Punjab and escaped. The police engaged in their investigation got hold of a video from Zangi app. With the help of the video, the police chased them for 800 kilometers and reached Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh. Here, along with the local police, all three terrorists were killed in an encounter. Criminals and drug smugglers have been using this app for their communication for a long time.

Why are criminals using Jangi app?

Actually, conversations happening on apps like Jangi are not stored on any centralized server. Because of this, it becomes difficult for investigating agencies to retrieve or obtain messages in any criminal cases. Apart from this, there is no need of mobile number or email etc. to register on such apps. Here only the user name and password is used. After this, users get a 10 digit number, with the help of which they can contact other similar app users through IP. Due to this, they do not even come under the radar of surveillance.

no data is stored

No user data is stored on these apps. The message gets automatically deleted after reading. Therefore, even if a criminal is caught, there is no evidence of his contacts and conversations. In such a situation, the investigating agencies have to face difficulties in proving the crime in the court.

Jangi app is banned in India

Such cases have been coming to light in the country for a long time, in which drug smugglers, terrorists and criminals are using apps like Jangi and many others like it for communication. After receiving inputs from investigating agencies, the government had banned 14 apps including Jangi in May last year. The government had cited security concerns as the reason behind this.
