Technology is continuously improving people’s lives. Now in a recent case, with the help of technology, a paralyzed person has succeeded in flying a virtual drone in a test using only his thinking. An AI model understood the thoughts coming to his mind and helped him fly the drone on the screen. This is being considered a big success. Now there is hope that this technology will develop further in future, which will make the life of disabled people more convenient.
Made possible with the help of BCI technology
A lot of work is being done on Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) for the last few years. In this, a chip is installed in the person’s brain, which can do things like moving the mouse by understanding the thoughts going on in the mind. Now in the latest case, Matthew Wilse of Michigan University and his colleagues have achieved great success. He has prepared an algorithm. If a user thinks of moving his hand in his mind, then it catches those signals.
How did the latest trials happen
The latest case involved an unidentified man who was paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury. BlackRock Neurotech’s BCI made of 192 electrodes was fitted in his brain. It was installed in the part of the brain that controls the movement of the hands. After this, with the help of an AI model, the thoughts going on in his mind were understood. As soon as the user thought in his mind that he had to move his hands, the AI model understood it and did it.
What is the way forward?
The researcher says that the results of this test have been encouraging, but a lot of work still needs to be done. More research will have to be done to make the use of BCI safe in difficult tasks.
