Due to the increasing use of Indian languages for digital content, the Internet user base in India will cross 90 crore by 2025. This information has been given in a latest report that came on Thursday. The number of active internet users in India is expected to reach 886 million in 2024, showing a strong growth of 8 percent on an annual basis. According to the reports of Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and Kantar, rural India is not lagging behind in this matter. It is far ahead with 48.8 crore users and 55 percent of the total internet population lives here.
Boost of content in Indian languages
Almost all internet users (98 percent) consumed content in Indian languages, with Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam emerging as the most popular due to their wide availability. According to the report, more than half (57 percent) of urban internet users prefer to consume content in regional languages, indicating a growing demand for local language content across various platforms.
AI is becoming a gamechanger
In the last one year, ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) has emerged as an important game changer. Nine out of 10 Internet users have used apps with embedded AI capabilities. Biswapriya Bhattacharya, Director B2B and Technology, Kantar Insights-South Asia said, "The widespread acceptance and enthusiasm around AI should encourage digital companies to introduce next-generation AI features in India."
The digital gender gap is decreasing
The digital gender gap in India continues to narrow, with 47 percent of all internet users in the country being women – an all-time high. A significant portion of shared device users in rural India, now 58 percent, are female internet users. The report says this reflects progress over the past few years in making digital access more inclusive and equitable.
Rural users are ahead in this matter
Rural India dominates online engagement for top activities, including OTT video and music streaming, online communication and social media use. In these categories, rural users are ahead of urban users. Urban India leads the way in adoption of non-traditional devices like smart TVs and smart speakers, which is expected to grow by 54 percent between 2023 and 2024.
